Plans are in the works to start construction on the new West Orange Relief High School… more

A planned $70 million relief high school in west Orange County is finally moving forward after nearly two years of fighting between Orange County and the school district.

The Orlando office of SchenkelShultz Architecture was chosen by Orange County Public Schools as the architect for the 385,000-square-foot West Orange Relief High School, which is slated to open in 2017 on a site near County Road 535 and Ficquette Road.

The school, which will accommodate nearly 2,800 students, is needed to relieve overcrowding at West Orange High School.

County commissioners last month approved the plan for the school and in April gave the OK to a compromise plan for the school to be built in a rural area, ending the battle between the commission and the school board, which had previously resulted in a moratorium on homebuilding in west Orange. It started when the school board in December 2013 sued over the county’s decision to deny the school’s rezoning request, as previously reported by Orlando Business Journal.
